Exciting news about a new Journey with the help of Fitbit

This month we’re working with the American Heart Association and inspirational Real Women who have made big, positive changes in their lives through exercise. And we’re helping them go even further, outfitting them with a Fitbit Flex to help take their health and activity to the next level. We’ll be checking in over the next few months with Real Women like Paula to see how Fitbit has motivated them to include physical activity in their daily lives. So stay tuned!
And don’t forget that you can get involved, too. Fitbit Red Flex purchases from May 1st through end of day tomorrow (May 31st) benefit the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement. Check out http://www.fitbit.com for more information and to purchase.

Paula Chavez has two simple messages for women struggling to make health changes: No more guilt. No more excuses. This became her personal mantra following an annual physical a few years ago.
Paula Chavez
Just 32 at the time, her doctor warned her that some changes had to be made if she were going to live long enough to see her grandchildren. Her goal of better health became even more important last year, after her father passed away from a sudden heart attack.
“My father died before he was able to meet my youngest child and I really struggle with that,” Paula says. “I was passionate about this topic before because of my own health issues. Now I am on a mission to help stop this disease.”
Paula’s journey to better health began after her second child was born in 2010.  She was extremely overweight and battling high cholesterol. “You won’t see a single photo of me from that time because I never went anywhere and didn’t want pictures taken,” she says.
Paula’s shame about her appearance, combined with her doctor’s recommendation that she take cholesterol medication, made her realize it was time to change. “Why would I take medication for something that I knew I could control with diet and exercise?” she asked herself.
Making changes wasn’t easy. Her 70-pound weight loss journey, which took more than a year, began with small steps. She started exercising a little every day and making family recipes healthier. “I’m Hispanic and grew up eating a lot of animal products and thinking you had to fry most things to make them taste good,” she says. “ I didn’t diet to lose the weight. I completely transformed the way I ate.”
Little by little, Paula added more fruits and vegetables to her diet and began cooking differently. Soon healthy living became a family affair. When her husband started getting healthier too, his own cholesterol and blood pressure numbers started to improve. Before her father died, Paula encouraged both him and her mother to transform their eating habits.
Though they lived in Colombia and Paula lives in New Jersey, Paula enjoyed “sharing” family meals again because they talked about the foods they were preparing each day. Sharing what she’s learned with family and friends has become a calling. Paula, a certified fitness instructor, started a free fitness club at a local school one night per week.
She uses social media to share heart-healthy tips and has online “friends” she has never met rooting her on and thanking her for helping them live healthier lives. Her advice for living a heart-healthy life? “Become aware of your family medical history and learn your cholesterol and blood pressure levels,” says Paula.  “Have a conversation with your doctor about your heart disease risk factors and about recommendations for a healthy lifestyle.”
With a part-time job and three children ages 11 months, 3 and 10, Paula can relate to women who are juggling the demands of family and career. But her own health is now top priority. “What good does it do my family if I am not here in the long run to take care of them?” she says. “I am taking care of me and setting an example for my kids, who now see that healthy eating and exercise are just part of our family routine.”

The Science behind the Shakeology cleanse

by Steve Edwards, Director of Results

I like to call the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse a “performance cleanse.” This is because it was designed to be done with a workout program. Let’s take a look at how this differs from other cleanses, how to tailor it to your needs, and what to expect if you decide to try it.

First of all, it’s not a true cleanse. It’s a calorie-restricted and nutrient-dense diet plan. Traditional cleanses contain very few calories and nutrients. Compared to the much more popular Master Cleanse, it’s like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Traditional cleansing diets are done to rid your system of toxins and bring it into homeostasis. They also contain a spiritual aspect. This process can take a long time, which is why you may have seen coworkers walking around the office in a zombie-like state for weeks on end—swilling a strange concoction of lemons and maple syrup.

The Shakeology cleanse is nothing like that. Depending on how you decide to do it, you’ll be eating frequently and consuming between 800 and 1,200 calories per day, and it could be even more should you feel the need. The point of this cleanse is not calorie restriction, per se—it’s nutrient efficiency. The aim is to get the most nutrients possible into the fewest number of calories. The goal is to put all of these calories to use as a part of your exercise program, to rid your body of undigested foods and toxins, and to bring your hydration levels into homeostasis. The result you’re after is not weight loss—though it will likely occur—but for your body to be running more efficiently. This should make you feel lighter and more energetic, even though you’re doing an exercise program.

How It Works
Your eating structure doesn’t change. You still eat every few hours while you’re awake. Each meal should have a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber. And while you’re not eating as much food as you’d normally eat, your calorie-to-nutrient ratio is extremely high. This means that you shouldn’t restrict the actual nutrients you’re getting by too much, so activity can continue as normal.

We recommend you try to keep your shakes to just Shakeology. Adding fruits of any kind, or seeds (for fat and fiber), or the Shakeology Fiber supplement, can and should be done as you see fit.

Ditto for your one solid meal—a salad. As we all know from any salad bar, the definition of salad can be varied. The goal of the salad in the plan is to keep your calories coming from natural sources (no artificial ingredients should be added, including artificial salad dressing). Aside from that, you can add ingredients as necessary. Keep your meat intake to four ounces or less, but add veggies, seeds, nuts, fruits, and legumes in quantities to satiate you.

The goal of the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse is to optimize your performance. You want to eat enough to fuel your day AND your workout. The foods you’re eating are so high in fiber and nutrients that it’s virtually impossible to overeat. You’ll be consuming so much fiber, along with enzymes and digestive aids, that your body’s ability to flush excess foods quickly will be at its peak.

What to Drink
Water, of course, is recommended in quantity. This is vital to any cleanse, because one of your goals is to bring your hydration into homeostasis. When your electrolytes are out of balance—the main problem we have is salt—you often retain water outside of your cells. This situation, which we refer to as retaining water, is cured by drinking more water. As the excess salts are diffused, your body begins to hydrate your cells (using sodium as it should be used) and flush the water held outside the cells. So, oddly enough, you drink water to eliminate water retention.

Sodas, alcohols, juices, etc., should be eliminated entirely during a cleanse. Coffee and tea, which are diuretics, should be minimized at the very least and eliminated if possible. Again, performance is the key, so if you need a cup of Joe as a pick-me-up, go ahead. Just use only as needed, and don’t use additives. Eliminating sugar and chemicals is vital. However, do not use energy drinks or soda for this purpose, including the ones with artificial sweeteners. Coffee drinkers may find that switching to black tea during a cleanse will give you the energy you’re looking for with less upset. Coffee’s acidic nature can heighten the effects in a negative way during your cleanse.

Why You Won’t Lose Weight
I should say why you might not lose weight, but I wanted to get your attention. Most people will lose some weight during a cleanse, but that is not the goal. Those with a lot of undigested gunk in their systems will lose weight as it’s flushed out. Those of you who are properly hydrated and already eat well are less likely to lose. For those of you who need to lose weight, take heart: you are setting up your system to use nutrients more efficiently and improving your ability to lose weight through structured diet and exercise. So while you may not lose much on the cleanse, you’ll be more prepared to lose weight later.

Another reason why we don’t always lose weight on cleanses is due to a stress hormone called cortisol. Restricting calories is stressful to the body, and it reacts by releasing cortisol.  Cortisol is performance-enhancing in the short term, but if you somehow keep your body stressed for long periods, it creates havoc in your system and can cause you to doggedly hang onto weight in a type of survival mode. We don’t want this to occur, which is one reason the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse is short. It’s important not to remain in a highly calorie-deficient state for long periods of time, especially when you are trying to exercise hard.

What can Shakeology do for you?

Hmmmmm..... let's see,
1. Shakeology lowers your risk of heart disease and diabetes. It significantly lowers your blood pressure and blood sugar levels because its ingredients are rich in antioxidants and rank low on the glycemic index scale. Thus, with a glycemic index rating of just 24, the Shakeology meal replacement shake increases your levels of glycogen and allows more fat to be burned. As a result, heart disease is prevented and your blood sugar and insulin levels are kept stable without dangerous spikes or crashes.

2. Shakeology keeps your immune system healthy. With green and red “superfoods” like Goji berry, Acai berry, Camu-camu, and wheatgrass, Shakeology helps to combat oxidative stress caused by free radicals which threaten to wreck havoc on our bodies and contribute to the aging process. Oxidative stress is the culprit behind many degenerative diseases like cancer and arthritis.

3. It promotes digestive health. The Beachbody Shakeology shake has prebiotics that promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut, helping to improve digestive function. Thanks to Shakeology, your bowel movement becomes more regular, ensuring that your body gets rid of the garbage that it does not need. Disease is prevented as a result, and some participants of an independent study on the efficacy of Shakeology have reported that they have weaned themselves off their colitis medications.

4. Shakeology helps to promote muscle growth and development, and it facilitates the faster healing of wounds. It has proteins and amino acids from whole food sources that ensure quicker muscle repair and the formation of new muscles.

5. It helps with those trying to lose weight. Because the Shakeology cleanse frees the body of toxins, it brings back the body’s state of equilibrium. As a result, the system can now function more efficiently to further get rid of excess weight. Moreover, since it has a low glycemic index rating and is nutrient-dense, this beverage reduces cravings significantly, preventing you from unnecessary snacking.

6. Shakeology promotes mental clarity and focus. It also reduces the incidence of migraines and headaches in those who suffer from these conditions chronically.

7. Drinking Shakeology contributes to healthier skin, nails and hair. Hair is more lustrous, skin is smoother, and nails become stronger by just drinking one glass a day. This can be attributed to Shakeology’s protein and amino acid content.

8. The last of the Shakeology benefits we’ll cover are overall feelings of wellness and increased energy, attributable to its vitamin and mineral content. Many people have reported significant increases in their energy levels after adding Shakeology to their diet.

Sooooo, do you think you could benefit from drinking one Shakeology a day?

The Program that changed my life

I am so excited to SHARE something with you! But first let's go back in time and let me tell you why, today, I am excited about what I have to Share with you!

Let's go back in time, see the picture, take a look at the one on the left, 220lb unhappy ME!  I was that "happy to be mommy for the second time mommy!" See my smile? Exactly no smile, no teeth showing.     I've always been know for my bright smile showing my white teeth.  There is no smile here, no smile because doing this was horrible, definitely a form of torture.  Having to take a before picture felt like the most embarrassing thing in the world, but I'm glad i did it because I didn't really think things were this bad.  Up until this point, end of July 2010, I was embarrassed to go out, embarrassed to wear shorts, ashamed of my physical appearance and the worst part, this had affected my confidence.  Getting dressed was hard, wearing Winter pregnancy clothes in the middle of July in New Jersey was just RIDICULOUS!  I put myself in this bubble and took my family with me.  Invites to BBQs, outings to the beach, afternoons at the park.... not me, all declined! I had nothing to wear and having to go to the mall and try on bigger sized clothes was not acceptable.
A friend of mine had been doing some workouts, this little thing called Insanity, she had lost weight and I thought, ok, if she can do it, why not me??? So I ran home called husband and told him all about it.  He bought me the Deluxe Package and I couldn't be happier.  UPS truck arrives a few days later, at around 5pm, and i couldn't wait to get started.  See what I'm wearing on that picture? that was my workout outfit.  opened the box, excited to get started, ready to push play, and there comes the Fit Test!! holy crap!!! What a test to my fitness.... FAILED!!! THEN THE "BEFORE" PICTURE!!! Can you see on my face that this was torture? it was one of the worst days of my life!! Looking at that picture enlarged on the computer screen was so embarrassing!!!  but looking back it as also the determining factor to DRIVE ME THROUGH THIS JOURNEY! I didn't want to look like this anymore! Didn't want to feel like this anymore!  I kept pushing play and trying and trying, not seeing much results.  I was doing something but not really enjoying it.  It felt like TORTURE!!! there were tears, doubts, more tears and set backs, but I was committed..... I wanted change so bad but I knew I needed something I actually enjoyed.  That didn't feel like I was being punished by my late night binging and addiction to Coca-Cola. I started looking for another option and I am so glad I did!!!!
And then my fitness fairy appeared..............YUP!!! There she was!! Punching and Kicking became my JAM!!! I begged my husband for this new program as a Birthday gift and he delivered!!!   I got the package delivered actually a few days before my birthday and i started... It wasn't a Monday!! it was the day after Thanksgiving.  Who starts a diet on a Friday, and not any Friday, Black Friday!! the beginning of the Holidays? was I crazy? maybe, but i was DETERMINED!!                                                                  Fast Forward, 90 days passed and let just tell you how much my life changed!!!! I lost 40 lbs in 90 days!! 90 freaking days.  Quit drinking Coke and I didn't miss any workouts, even with a new baby at home!! I felt on top of the world.
I Succeeded at changing my lifestyle! Not only did I lose weight, but I become this happy to exist Woman.  I lost the fear to go out and be judged, I lost the muffin top, I lost the double chin, I could wear clothes that had been sitting in my closet for years waiting for this day! I felt so accomplished and today, after losing a total of 80lbs, including having a 3rd pregnancy along this journey, I feel at the healthiest, fittest, happiest level possible!!!
Let me share with you, for the first time, my entire transformation in pictures, one by one, program after program, I documented it, because it kept me going.  I hope now it also INSPIRES YOU, MOTIVATES YOU and also shows you that I wasn't born fit, I didn't just wake up one day leaner, fitter and loving Insanity  Kale! It was a step by step, day by day journey.  It still is.  I don't consider myself perfect.  I think of it as a daily lifestyle that I never again want to give up!
 THE DREADED BEFORE PICTURE!
this was torture for sure.

A few months later, because I had a new iphone, my daughter said, mommy, show me your muscles, let me take a picture.  When she showed me this picture, I couldn't believe my eyes.  I had been in such denial that when I looked at the mirror, I wasn't really looking, so I wasn't seeing the changes in my body, until I saw this picture, and ran to the computer to look for the stupid BEFORE picture! I couldn't believe my eyes! Yes, I had a long way to go, but to me this was change! This was motivation to keep going because my efforts, my sweat, the 5am wake ups, Shakeology, it was all working!!! I finished TurboFire and from this point on a flame sparked in my heart! I wanted more!!!

I FELT HAPPIER THAN EVER BEFORE! I felt strong, empowered, inspired, committed,
I felt like SUPERMOM!!!

AND THEN CAME DIEGO! Pregnant!!! not again!!! after losing 70 lbs I was shocked! I couldn't accept it! I thought my hard work and fitness would go out the window and would never get it again! that lasted about two weeks, I wiped the tears, read books and with my doctor's approval, I kept doing what I was doing, drinking a daily shakeology, eating healthy, working out, and actually completed 90 days of TurboFire the third trimester, just before he was born! I gained about 27-28 lbs.  Boom! I felt so accomplished again! He was almost 9 lbs oh yes!

Anxiouly waiting for the 6 weeks ok from doctor!!  I felt so good about myself
and my healthy baby,
I didn't fear the selfie! ha!

Back to the grind we go! Operation get my Fitness back begins again!

and all this journey has brought me to this!!! How could I not want this for you!!  I want to help you change your life, help you discover an inner strength that you haven't discovered yet.  WHY NOT?  It won't change who you are but it will help you discover an enhanced version of yourself.  You'll become stronger, healthier, livelier!

I feel the need to share this with you!! May is a new month full of new opportunities, and if you happen to be at that place where I was, 4 years ago, where i felt hopeless, tired, embarrassed, unhappy, and uncomfortable with myself, I want you to stop there and know that there is HOPE!!! This is not how your story ends.  Amazing things have happened in my life just because I made that decision to make my health a priority.  It is not fair to yourself or to those you love that you give up on yourself and not give yourself a chance to DISCOVER THAT PERSON YOU ARE MEANT TO BE! You life will change. And it starts with the decision to make the change and take action.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Workout?

This question always comes up.  What to do?? My opinion is this....LIFE HAPPENS, allergies happen, sick babies happen, late meetings at work happen, the snooze button happens.  So what.  Keep in mind that you are on a journey to change your lifestyle not a 21, 30, 60 or 90 day diet and then go back to the old you.   It's about the choices we make every day and the food you eat every day, and the improvements in your fitness you do every day.  Does it matter if you skip one day, NO! Of course, rethink what is it that is getting on the way, is it a real reason, or is it an excuse, or just not finding the time to do it?

I have a few rules that I created for myself and they helped me lose my excess weight and help me today to stay on track and focused.
1. Never miss a Monday Workout.
2. Never go 2 days in a row without any type of exercise.
3. Workout at least 4 days of the week.
If you miss a day (or two, or three), just get back at it as if nothing has happened, starting with the workout you skipped. Miss much longer and you've got a decision to make. You can either start the program over from scratch, or ramp yourself back to the place you were when you stopped.
Ultimately, when you get back to your program, what you do is really about what will keep you motivated. That said, doing the full program as scheduled is the best way to make sure you get full benefit from it. If you just miss a few days, it's fine to resume where you left off, but if it's been weeks, you've probably lost most of your gains fitness-wise, so it's worth starting from scratch in order to get the most possible gains and to avoid injury.

And keep this in mind  if you've been off more than 5 or 6 days. Start back up slowly or you'll risk getting so sore you can hardly move by exhausting all of your fast-twitch muscle fibers. Most programs offers a recovery week, a good idea would be to start with that.

Keep pushing play, don't give up! FOCUS!
